Building CASA's Power for Three Decades

Gustavo Torres, executive director of CASA and president of CASA in Action, has amplified the voices of millions of immigrants in the United States. Today, we celebrate Gustavo’s 30 years at CASA.

CASA began as a regional organization in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties, Maryland, in 1985. Under his leadership, it has flourished from being a small non-profit run out of a church basement to a national immigrant mobilization powerhouse. Members clamored to organize in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and now Georgia in 2021. Advocacy wins that headline Torres’ tenure as executive director include immigrant driving privileges in Maryland and Virginia, immigrant drivers’ privacy in Maryland and Virginia, in-state tuition for DACA recipients in Maryland and Virginia, ready for 100 % renewable resolution in York City Council in Pennsylvania, and more. Thanks to the leadership and guidance of Gustavo Torres, CASA has created its family of organizations to include CASA in Action, a 501 C4 that has won tremendous electoral victories, including the 2020 elections, on behalf of candidates who embrace policies that benefit the immigrant community. Thirty years is a milestone in Torres’ career that is warmly welcomed by beloved members, staff, and friends of CASA.
