CASA Applauds House Passage of HR6
The Senate Must Follow in the House’s Leadership
Washington, DC – CASA members – DREAMers and TPS holders – applaud the passage of the Dream and Promise Act today in the House of Representatives. The bill provides a pathway to citizenship to over two million people, including immigrant youth and beneficiaries of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED) programs. Since Trump was elected to office, he has done away with the programs.
“We applaud members of Congress who today took a historic step to support some of the many immigrants contributing every day to our country,” said Gustavo Torres, Executive Director of CASA. “We are living in a period of nativist tyranny emanating from the White House, burdened by a Republican Party that has zero moral compass. Thankfully, Democratic legislators stood up for their constituents in passing a bill that reflects our values as a people.”
Among the dozens of CASA members watching the vote for the gallery were Maria Rivas and Gaby Hernandez. Maria is a TPS holder who, together with her husband who is also a TPS holder, have raised 4 children in the United States.
“Given everything we hear every day in the news with attacks on immigrants, I was proud to listen to the amazing statements that recognize the contributions my husband and I make every day to my community and our adopted nation,” said Maria.
Also watching the vote was Gaby Hernandez, a DREAMer from Prince George’s County who was recognized from the floor by her Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD5). Gaby is a high achieving college student that has made countless contributions to her local community.
“While what happened today is not final relief, it was thrilling to see so many legislators stand up for my family, my life, and my future,” said Gaby. “We have spent countless hours talking with our neighbors, organizing actions, and speaking with legislators. Today was the result!”
