End Mass Incarceration
CASA works with civil rights organizations and formerly incarcerated individuals across the nation in the fight to end mass incarceration. The United States continues to be a world leader in locking people up, with the highest number of incarcerated individuals worldwide — over 2.12 million people in prison. Globally, the United States makes up nearly 5% of the population, yet holds approximately 25% of the world’s prison population. Unsurprisingly, African Americans and Latinos are disproportionately represented in the prison system. Immigrant communities, especially undocumented immigrants and their families suffer from even higher stakes facing both our broken criminal justice system and our broken immigration system.
Our fight to end mass incarceration does not end with the reduction of prisoners but paired with improving the inadequate and inhumane conditions in our prison system, ending the exploitation of labor and providing protections against cruel punishment, and ultimately ending the pipeline of people entering the prison system through unfair policing practices to begin with.
