On February 27, 2025, Governor Youngkin launched a dangerous assault on immigrant families in Virginia. His directive to deputize state law enforcement as immigration agents under 287(g) agreements is an appalling move that will terrorize communities, erode public trust, and make all of us less safe.
These agreements force local law enforcement to act as ICE agents. That’s something they were never meant to do. Research shows that these policies disproportionately target Black and brown immigrants, tearing families apart and criminalizing people who have little or no criminal history. They do not improve public safety. Instead, they create a climate of fear, making victims and witnesses too afraid to report crimes.
