In direct response to the Baltimore County school teacher who proactively contacted ICE offering up the personal information of students who participated in an immigrant solidarity day, immigration and advocacy powerhouse CASA urges the Baltimore County Public Schools’ Board of Education to provide stronger protection for students and their families against Immigrations Customs and Enforcement (ICE) and pass these recommended reforms.
The School Reforms Sought
To ensure all students, regardless of immigration status, have equal access to a safe and supportive education, we are asking Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) to create policies that prevent the use of school resources for immigration enforcement. This includes adhering to strict legal procedures when interacting with immigration authorities, safeguarding student privacy, and fostering an inclusive, fear-free environment for all students and their families.
- Protect Access to Education: Ensure that all students can safely access education without fear of immigration enforcement.
- Enforce Immigration Policies: Train staff to follow clear protocols when handling immigration-related matters.
- Promote Awareness: Educate staff, students, and families about immigrant rights and available resources.
- Limit Enforcement Interference: Prevent immigration enforcement activities on school grounds unless mandated through a judge-signed warrant.
- Protect Data: Safeguard student data, adhering to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and protect against the unnecessary collection of sensitive information, including immigration status.
