What do you know about the history of segregation in the U.S.?
Redlining is one of the practices the U.S. used in the 1930s to segregate neighborhoods. Neighborhoods that were deemed as “risky” were outlined in red on maps created by the federal government. These neighborhoods were thus, invested in less.
Not coincidentally, these neighborhoods had a majority of Black and immigrant residents, and still today have a similar demographic which continue to suffer from this negligence.
This negligence takes form in the lack of greenery and the abundance of paved surfaces which naturally led to more pollution and consequently higher negative health effects for residents such as asthma and hospitalizations due to high temperatures.
