CASA Executive Director Gustavo Torres issues Statement on President Trump’s Unconstitutional Executive Order Calling for an End to Citizenship for U.S. born Children of Non-Residents

It is an outrage that President Trump thinks he can end birthright citizenship to children of non-citizens. He is only using this rhetoric to rile up his base leading up to the midterm elections. Ending citizenship for children born in the United States of non-citizens is unconstitutional. The President cannot issue an executive order bypassing the constitution that states under the 14^th amendment that all children born in the United States are citizens of the U.S.

According to the U.S. Constitution, amended 150 years ago include the words, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

The latest NBC/WSJ news poll states that 65 percent of Americans favor granting citizenship to all children born in the United States.
