Protecting Immigrant Families

As we face the next four years under a second Trump administration, Black and Brown immigrant families are under greater attack than ever before. With a sweeping mass deportation agenda and a range of xenophobic, often unlawful policies promised, CASA’s immigration agenda is focused on enacting state protections to safeguard our community:

Protecting Sensitive Locations Act

No one should hesitate to seek life-saving care or attend school due to fear of immigration enforcement. This act establishes clear guidelines restricting ICE access to sensitive locations, including schools, courthouses, hospitals, places of worship, and other vital spaces.

Maryland Data
Privacy Act

Immigrant families should be able to access critical government services without worrying that their information will be shared with federal immigration authorities. This act blocks ICE from obtaining warrantless access to state and local agency databases.

Ending 287(g)
Agreements

This legislation terminates 287(g) agreements that allow local police to act as ICE agents. These agreements have been repeatedly abused, enabling racist sheriffs to racially profile and target marginalized communities. Ending this program is essential for restoring public trust.

With a mass deportation agenda and range of xenophobic, often unlawful federal policies, CASA’s immigration agenda is focused on state protections to safeguard our immigrant community.

Housing Justice & Tenant’s Rights

As a Renters United Maryland coalition member, CASA remains committed to protecting renters and ensuring the most vulnerable among us can remain in their homes.

Good Cause
Evictions

No one should be evicted from their home for no good reason - housing is a human right. This enabling legislation will allow local jurisdictions to pass their own Good Cause laws, ensuring no family is evicted arbitrarily by a landlord. Good Cause requires transparency and accountability from corporate landlords for why they are choosing to evict a tenant.

Maintain Funding for Eviction-Prevention Programs

Funding for the Right to Counsel and Eviction Prevention programs has been crucial in keeping Marylanders in their homes. The General Assembly must continue to protect families from eviction by funding these programs.

Climate & Environmental Justice

Threats from climate change and environmental degradation are at an all-time high and disproportionally impact communities of color. These communities consistently have the highest Environmental Justice (EJ) scores, meaning higher exposure to pollution and environmental hazards. CASA is dedicated to addressing these inequities.

CHERISH Act

The Cumulative Impacts to Environmental Restoration and Community Health (CHERISH) Act protects overburdened communities from polluting industries and facilities by requiring state agencies to consider the cumulative impact of new polluting facilities and projects and Black and brown communities.
