How to Register to Vote

The first step to being a voter is making sure you are registered to vote in Virginia.

Check your registration status, update your new address, and check your voter history on the Virginia Department of Elections website:

If you haven’t registered to vote yet, follow these instructions to ensure you can cast a ballot for the March 12, 2024 Presidential General Election!

1. Obtain a voter registration application

2. Complete your voter registration application

Or pick up an application from any of the following locations: 

  • Local voter registrar’s office
  • Armed forces recruitment offices
  • Public libraries
  • Georgia Department of Elections Office
  • Department of Motor Vehicles Office
  • Voter registration drives
  • State of local government offices 
  • Complete all information on the application. If any information requested does not apply to you, indicate such by writing the word “none” or “N/A” in that space
  • Sign and date the registration application

3. Submit your voter registration application by October 7,2024

  • If you are registering online, the deadline to submit your application is October 7th at 11:59 p.m.
  • If you are registering with a physical application, mail your application via the U.S. Postal Service or hand-deliver it to any official registration office by 5:00 p.m.

You can vote early at your local registrar’s office or local satellite voting site between Monday, October 15, 2024, and Friday November 1st, 2024

To vote early, you must provide your name, address, and an acceptable form of ID or sign an ID confirmation statement affirming your identity.

How to Vote by Email

The deadline to request your vote by mail ballot for the Presidential General Election is November 5, 2024, at 5 p.m. Don’t wait until the last minute!

Apply to vote by mail on the Department of Elections citizen portal:

You can also apply to vote by mail by:
  • Downloading a paper form from the Department of Elections’ Voter Forms page
  • Obtaining a paper form at your county registrar’s office

You can submit your vote by mail application form by mail, fax, or email. To find your local registrar’s contact information, use this Look-up Tool.

Your ballot must be returned to your Local Registrar by 7pm on Election Day. If you plan to send it back by mail, it must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by noon the third day following Election Day. Some counties offer ballot drop-off boxes, so be sure to check your local registrar’s website for up-to-date information!

How to Vote In-Person on Nov 5th

Go to your polling location on Election Day, November 5th. Polling locations are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you are standing in line at 7:00 p.m., you must be allowed to vote.

You will be asked to provide ID to vote, but if you don’t have a form of acceptable ID, you can sign a statement confirming your identity and must be allowed to cast a regular ballot. The full, expanded list of acceptable IDs can be found here.
