“We celebrate this next step in finally seeing Hyattsville’s rent stabilization bill implemented.”
HYATTSVILLE, MD – As the City of Hyattsville moves its rent stabilization ordinance forward, Eden Aaron, CASA’s research and policy analyst, issued the following statement.
“CASA members fought tirelessly in Prince George’s County to pass a rent stabilization this past summer, and we are proud to support Hyattsville’s ordinance that takes the county's legislation further by addressing key limitations, such as the higher rental cap and the fixed exemption rate.
“Hyattsville's Ordinance links rent increases to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and adopts a rolling exemption for new buildings, which protects more rental units and provides greater predictability for tenants. This ordinance addresses the urgent need for affordable housing and helps safeguard our most vulnerable residents against rising costs. We celebrate this next step in finally seeing Hyattsville’s rent stabilization bill implemented.”
The City of Hyattsville had a discussion on the draft rent stabilization ordinance on September 16, 2024. It is expected that the ordinance will come back to the council for a first reading and vote sometime in October (exact date unknown). The ordinance is expected to get a final vote in the November – December time frame.
