HYATTSVILLE, MD – With Congress responding to popular support demanding LGBT rights, CASA Executive Director, Gustavo Torres issued the following statement, supporting nationwide marriage equality. Congress has moved ahead on the Respect for Marriage Act, placing the bill on track to become law with the President’s signature expected.
“CASA celebrates the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act and the resilience of the LGBTQ community in the fight to secure the right to marry who they love. We live in turbulent times where the rights of marginalized communities are under constant attack. As marriage equality moves to become the law of the land, we find joy in knowing that many of our friends, neighbors and family no longer have to worry about their marriage status being repealed or prohibited.
“Ultimately, this is sending a strong message to conservative Supreme Court judges and ultra-rightwing activists that when Congress listens to the voice of the people, a bipartisan coalition will ratify acceptance and love into law. We need Congress to move on confirming another bedrock individual right: reproductive rights. Giving people back control of their bodies cements the right for a person to love themselves. Love will always triumph.”
