Gaithersburg, MD – CASA is pleased that the Gaithersburg City Council extended the emergency ordinance to prohibit residential rent increases until May 15, 2022. Gustavo Torres, CASA executive director, said the following of this tenant-led victory:

“This is a massive relief of financial pressure for hundreds of Gaithersburg tenants. These families are still feeling the effects of the pandemic and struggle to pay rent. This ordinance holds landlords accountable and ensures to protect families from homelessness. We are grateful to those council members who stood with tenants and most especially to the brave tenants who organized to make their voices heard.”

CASA members have been meeting with elected officials, landlords, and other leaders to secure this win. This is part of CASA’s organizing efforts empowering tenants most hurt by the economic aspects of COVID.
