Blanca

Blanca was a teacher in Guatemala who decided to emigrate to the United States fifteen years ago for improved economic stability, greater independence and a safer place to raise her children. She is now a housekeeper and says, “the language gap between speaking with people is something that I struggle with… I decided to take the classes so I could speak with the doctors, teachers, employer, neighbors, and friends.”

In August she enrolled in an intermediate level in-person evening class and is now set to participate in her third consecutive session beginning in February 2024. Blanca’s son accompanies her to class each evening to assist the Program Coordinator and earn his high school service hours. Thanks to her near perfect attendance rate, Blanca says, “I have more confidence and am able to speak clearly with others. It made communication with doctors, teachers, etc. easier. I highly recommend these classes to anyone who needs to learn to read, write, and speak in English.” One of her long-term goals is to get a better job so she can continue to raise her family in the US while also supporting those still living in Guatemala. But her most important goal is to see her three children graduate from college.
