WASHINGTON D.C. (Nov. 1, 2016)_ CASA, the firm Bailey & Glasser, LLP and victims of an August fire at the Flower Branch Apartments will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 1, to make a major announcement.
“We are seeking justice for the victims of the fire,” said Gustavo Torres, Executive Director for CASA. “This is not just about Flower Branch but about the conditions that led to this incident, conditions that are prevalent in low-income housing throughout the area.”
The explosion and subsequent fire occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday, August 10th, consuming two four-story apartment buildings at 8701 and 8703 Piney Branch Rd., near University Boulevard. The fire was the result of a gas explosion in a meter room, which was located in the basement of one of the buildings.
As a result of a fire:
- 7 people died, including two children.
- 30 or more were treated at area hospitals
- Dozens are suffering PTSD
- 84 families were displaced from their homes
The press conference will take place at 100 Constitution Ave., NW Washington DC. Speakers at the conference will include victims and relatives of victims.
