New Citizens and local and national dignitaries join CASA as it opens the Center for Citizenship Ceremony to be held on National Citizenship Day with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Who: CASA, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration León Rodriguez, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, dozens of new citizens and citizenship applicants, and more.

This Wednesday, CASA will hold a grand opening ceremony for the CASA Center for Citizenship. The center, opening on National Citizenship Day, will be dedicated to helping area immigrants take the final step into full political integration in American society. New citizens will be joined by USCIS Director León Rodriguez, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, and many more in the celebration.

The new Center will feature citizenship application assistance, citizenship classes, and a micro-loan program created by CASA in partnership with the District Government Employees Federal Credit Union, that makes the nearly $700 in application fees more affordable. The program also includes a strong focus on financial literacy including tax preparation, counseling, and banking access, job training, ESOL classes, health access, and other complementary services.

“Citizenship is an economic asset that enables low-income immigrants build more stable futures” said Gustavo Torres, Executive Director of CASA. “Together, the non-profit sector, government, donors, and the immigrant community itself is committed to fulfilling the promise of the full integration.”

In the Washington Metropolitan Region, over 300,000 Legal Permanent Residents are currently eligible to become citizens. Almost 80,000 of those striving New Americans live in Montgomery County where the Center will be housed.

Supporters of CASA’s citizenship and financial work include; the Maryland Governor’s Office for Community Investment, the Corporation for National and Community Service, Citi, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Capital One, E*Trade, Freddie Mac, National Partnership for New Americans, the New Americans Campaign, HSBC, and member contributions.  Additional funders of CASA’s workforce development programs include; Montgomery County, Norm Dreyfuss, Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Ford Foundation, Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, Wells Fargo, Comcast, State Farm, and MCAEL (Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy), among others.

CASA is a member of the National Partnership for New Americans, a national multiethnic, multiracial partnership representing the country’s 29 largest regional immigrant rights organizations that combine large integration service delivery with sophisticated organizing. Thursday’s launch is part of a nationally coordinated series of events organized by NPNA in 21 states.
