Communities Unite to Take Back Neighborhood – Candle Light Vigil

May 19, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

On Monday evening, Langley Park residents will gather together to mourn the murder of Akinleye Warner and call on the Langley Park community to become active in confronting gang violence robbing children from families.  Residents will join a procession to the infamous Northwest Branch trail – site of recent crimes and considered notoriously dangerous by local residents – by candlelight where they will pray for the families and call for an end to the violence.

Langley Park is a proud community of striving residents that also confronts significant challenges on the road to family success.  Rich in diversity, three out of four residents are Latino but neighbors come to the community from all corners of the world.  Recently, great strides have been made by Prince George’s County to focus resources here through the Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative. Just last month, the County announced that the opening of a multi-service County office to serve residents.

“I love my neighborhood and I will fight for it,” said Maria Guardado, a local community activist and CASA member.  “My children deserve to grow up in a place where they can strive and grow and I will dedicate my time to making sure that happens.”

“Prince George’s County NAACP commitment is to empower and motivate communities towards unity, strength, healing and peace. It is our belief that all entities must work together, sharing knowledge, ideas and efforts.” Said Bob Ross President of Prince George’s County NAACP.
